In Canton "the Kennedy [School] staff and principal . . . decided after much thoughtful discussion to replace the traditional 'costumes and candy' [Halloween] celebration with a more general fall-themed celebration that was considerate of curriculum, food allergy issues, religious views, and other individual needs."--Canton Citizen

We never had Halloween costume celebrations in school when I was child, and I don't see the need for them. But I don't like the reasons the school cites for not having such a celebration. There is really nothing religious about Halloween as it is celebrated today in the United States. There can be religious objections to almost anything, and I don't see that the religious opinions of a few should have any impact on the many. Also, people with food allergies need to learn to live in the world but should not expect the world to revolve around them.

I woke up early this morning about 3:40 a.m. because I heard a sound as if the furnace had stopped abruptly. I saw that there was no electricity and had to start my mobile phone to see the time. About two minutes later the electricity came back. I reset the time on the clock radio in my bedroom but did not bother with the other clocks. That was just as well, because I happened to wake up at 5:45 a.m. to see again that there was no electricity. It looked as if nobody on my street had electricity, but I could see that there were some electric lights on houses on the next street over. At the end of the block there was a truck from the electric company. I assumed the problem was something minor. I did not want to fall asleep without a working alarm clock because I wanted to get the trash out by 7 a.m. I don't like to put it out too far in advance in case raccoons or other animals get into it and strew it about.

At about 6:40 a.m. I put out the trash. I saw that the truck from the electric company was still at the end of the block.

At about 7:30 a.m. I walked toward the truck to get an idea of what was going on. A man said that the wire had broken mysteriously. He mentioned squirrels as a possibility. He said that the lights would not be back on until noon time at the earliest.

About 8 a.m. I photographed the wires and the orange cone. Then I drove to Starbucks and brought my laptop to use it there. I stayed there a little more than an hour and a half. Then I went to the gym. I usually go there late in the afternoon.

I got home about noon and there was still no electricity. It came back on about 12:15 p.m.

I've read reports that there are problems in the downtown area caused by youths who congregate and sometimes engage in acts of vandalism. Has anybody thought of music as a deterrence? Classical music--Vivaldi, Mozart, Haydn, etc.--or show tunes--from My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, etc.--would seem un-cool to young people and might create an ambience in which they would not want to congregate.
