The following is a public notice from the website of the town of Canton, Massachusetts:

The Boil Water Order has been lifted for the Town of Canton
As of 4PM Monday, October 3, 2011, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has lifted the boil water order.

The Town, late this afternoon, received written authorization to lift any water use restriction.   This State approval was granted as a result of numerous water quality samples taken in Canton that meet or exceeded stringent public drinking water standards.  All residential and commercial water customers can use the Town’s water without restriction with the exception of restaurants and food service providers.
The Town wishes to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding.  All Town response efforts including early public notification have been guided by ensuring the public’s health and safety.
Please share this important information with your friends and neighbors.
Should you need further information please contact our water division by calling 781 821 5017
All restaurant and other food service businesses must contact the Canton Health Department at 781-821-5021 on Tuesday Oct 4 at 8:00 am and receive a response with the Board of Health’s approval before returning to normal tap water use.

I just received an automated telephone message from the town of Canton that said, in part, that the boil-water order will remain in effect until Monday October 3.

I saw the following notice at the town's website just now:

The boil water order issued by the Dept of Environmental Protection will continue thru Sunday, October 2. The Town continues to flush the entire water system which replaces the water supply and ensures the chlorination of the entire water distribution system to your location. Chlorination is a normal and routine water quality treatment approach.

The additional chlorination may result in a change to the water color. Residents may also notice a chlorine odor from the water. Neither of these conditions are a health hazard. In fact these are signs that the Towns [sic] operational response is working to resolve water quality concerns as soon as possible.

Plans to establish a Point of Distribution for free water pickup for residents is [sic] underway and is [sic] expected to be operational by Friday September 30th. Further information on this will be provided via a reverse 911 call to you (expected) today.

The Town appreciates your continued patience and understanding. Our continued goal is to ensure public health and safety and this will guide all decision making.

I just received an automated telephone call from the town to say that there is a boil water order in effect, because e. coli bacteria have been found in the water. The order is expected to remain in effect for 48 to 72 hours. People should use bottled water or boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and cooking.

Here is a link to notice from Canton Water Department.

The Canton town meeting did not vote to increase the restaurant meals tax from 6.25% (all of which goes to the state) to 7% (the 0.75% would go to the town). There was a tie vote, 133 to 133.

UPDATE: Here is a link to a short article at PatriotLedger.com.

Re: Acct. # [redacted]

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing in response to your statement of 2/22/2011 that I received in the mail yesterday. As I have previously indicated to you, I have already paid you in full.

I wrote to you on January 14:

I have received no response to the voicemail message that I left on or about 4:07 p.m. on December 23, 2010.

Your statement to me of 12/13/2010, which I received in the mail on December 23, shows a 30-day-past-due balance of $85.00. The $85.00 item appears to be the one of 5/6/2010 that was included on your previous statement of 11/12/2010 for a total amount of $86.34. I gave my bank on November 19 instructions to send you a payment of $86.34.

I am enclosing herewith a print-out from [redacted] Bank that shows that a check to you in the amount of $86.34 cleared on 12/01/2010.

Since your November statement showed a balance of $86.34 and your December statement showed a balance of $85.00, it is obvious that something must have happened for you to have changed the amount of the outstanding balance. The obvious inference is that you received my payment of $86.34 and recorded it incorrectly.

Sincerely,

[redacted]
